Boating Accidents Lawyer

Here at Okun, Oddo & Babat, P.C., our team is experienced in handling boating accidents. We know that when summer arrives, New York residents will likely to be taking to the water. With ocean temperatures hovering at less than 60 degrees, boating provides a way to enjoy a day out without having to grapple with a wetsuit.

Unfortunately, the more people there are on area waterways, the greater potential for mishaps. Boating accidents can easily result in collisions and serious personal injuries. Before heading out, be aware of the dangers and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your fellow passengers from a boating accident.

Boating Safety Tips
According to the United States Coast Guard, there were over 4,100 boating accidents across the country last year that resulted in more than 600 deaths and more than 2,200 victims who sustained injuries. The cost of these boating accidents cost approximately $46 million.

The majority of boating accidents take place over the months of June, July, and August. In more than half of these cases, it is usually boater inexperience, inattention, or reckless behaviors that are to blame.

Whether you prefer the calm waters for pedal boating or take your own personal watercraft out into the ocean or one of the various bays, rivers, or lakes in the surrounding area, make safety a priority. Keep in mind the following safety tips:

  • Check the weather before you go. Be alert for wind, storms, or other conditions which could make the water choppy.
  • Use a pre-departure checklist. This can help ensure you are ready and that no important tasks, equipment, or supplies get left behind.
  • Play by the rules. Make sure you follow all New York boating regulations and avoid speeding and other reckless behaviors.
  • Name someone as assistant skipper. An extra pair of hands and insider knowledge will come in handy in the event of adverse conditions or if something happens to you.
  • Make a float plan. Always let someone know before you head out on the water. Give them information which can help in an emergency, such as your boat model, registration number, the number of people going with you, and your itinerary for the day.
  • Keep life jackets handy. Make sure you have the appropriate number and size for your passengers, that they are easily accessible, and in good working condition.
  • Avoid alcohol. As the captain of your vessel, you want to avoid alcohol completely. Be mindful with guests to avoid over serving, which could make slips and falls more likely to occur.

Taking the time to learn basic skills can protect you in an emergency. Take a boating safety course every few years to brush up on your knowledge, and make sure you and all of your passengers are competent swimmers. If an accident does happen, we strongly advise speaking with a member of our team at Okun, Oddo & Babat, P.C.
